15 Clever Uses For OxiClean Outside the Laundry Room!

Since I’ve been cleaning on a professional level, I have had a love affair with OxiClean. It just works! You put it in your laundry and your laundry comes out stain free. But, did you know that you can use OxiClean around the house to tackle other cleaning tasks? Let’s take a look at 15 ways you can use OxiClean around the house outside of the laundry room—some OxiClean hacks!

Before We Get Started

To make sure that OxiClean works properly you should follow these three tips.

1. Make sure that you’re always using hot water to mix up your solutions, this way the product can completely dissolve. If you need to use the solution on something where cold water is necessary, that’s fine, whip up the solution and then let it cool.
2. Make sure that the surface that you’re treating is always wet. In other words, be liberal with the application of OxiClean. You don’t want the solution to dry up on the surface.
3. Mix up your solutions on demand—make just enough for what you’re cleaning, don’t store it for later use.

Our Three Recipes

There are three different ways that you can mix up OxiClean when you’re using it outside of the laundry room.

1. Concentrate – 1 tablespoon of OxiClean to 2 tablespoons of water
2. Soak – 1/2 cup of OxiClean to a gallon of water
3. Spot Cleaner – 1 tablespoon of OxiClean to 1 cup of water

Greasy Range Hood Filters (Soak)

To clean your greasy overhead exhaust filters just boil up a kettle full of water and add your scoop of OxiClean to a bucket. You’re going to put a gallon of hot water in here and mix well. Take out your filter from the overhead exhaust compartment and just dunk it into the bucket filled with the solution. Leave it for 5 minutes and then flip it around. After 10 minutes this came out so clean—it was amazing! Just give it a good rinse and lay it flat to dry.

Running Shoes (Spot Clean)

Before you start always check the care label and the manufacturer’s website for the running shoe in question to make sure that you can use an oxygen-based cleaner on them. Chad’s shoes were in rough shape, completely covered with salt stains, and I knew this was something I could use OxiClean for. So, I whipped up my solution, grabbed a cleaning toothbrush and went to work using a circular motion. I cleaned all of the affected areas, ran it under water and let it sit to dry. They came out perfectly clean.

Upholstery Stains (Spot Clean)

Whatever kind of stain you encounter on your upholstery, as long as you test this product in a hidden area first, you should be able to get the stain out by using the spot clean solution and then treating the same surface with some water to remove any excess, blotting it up with a paper towel. I’ve had great success with this.

Toilet, Tub & Tiles (Concentrate)

OxiClean really nails it in the bathroom. Whip up your concentrate solution and apply liberally to affected areas. I often use it on grout lines and around the area where the toilet meets the floor. I apply liberally with a cleaning toothbrush, let it sit for about 10 or 15 minutes and then wipe up with some clean water and paper towel. If needed, you can re-apply and scrub those extra dirty spots with a cleaning toothbrush.

Shower Curtains (Soak)

Speaking of crusty things in the bathroom, you might have noticed that your shower curtain liner—that plastic inner one—has some nasty buildup on it. You can easily get rid of that soap scum, mildew, or even that pinky orange stuff with a simple OxiClean soak.  Simply remove the liner, create the soak solution in your tub, and toss the curtain in. Let the liner soak for 10 to 15 minutes then glove up and gently rub the curtain together removing any stubborn stains. Finally, give it a good rinse and then hang it back up to drip dry.

Kitchen Tiles (Concentrate)

The concentrate also works like a charm on kitchen tile grout which takes a huge beating from spills, thrills and everything in between. Just apply the concentrate to the grout lines and let it sit for 15 minutes. Generally, you don’t even need to scrub it. Finally just wipe away the solution with a damp cloth or paper towel and the watch the grout lines come out like new.

Kids Plastic Toys (Soak)

Riley’s toys have been a little bit gross lately because she has been sick. So I filled the sink with hot water and I added a scoop of the OxiClean baby product—which is scent free so I really love it for this application. Then, I put in toys that are safe to soak (all plastic, so no batteries or other material), I just drop them in and I let them sit for about 5 or 10 minutes. Swish them around with your hand then give them a good rinse.

Pet Stains & Odors (Concentrate)

Anywhere you might have a pet stain or odor, you can try OxiClean. My cat carrier often needs some TLC, so I just apply the product with a sponge, let it sit for 10 minutes, rinse it with some clean water and then dry it with a paper towel.

Patio & Deck (Spot Clean)

If you notice that there are some dark spots on your deck or patio, it probably means that there’s some mold or mildew going on—OxiClean is your fix. Just mix up your spot clean solution in a spray bottle and give the affected areas a really liberal spritz. Now, you really want to get these areas nice and soaking wet. Let it sit for about 30 minutes applying more liquid if the solution starts to dry up. Next, take a deck brush, or iron-handled brush, and give the areas a good scrub. If you want to get it a little bit more wet, feel free to spray more of the solution on there. Finally, give it a really good rinse with some clean water from the garden hose.

Garbage Bins (Soak)

I don’t know about you but my recycling and organic bins get stinky over time. You get spills, sweaty organic remnants, and even some stains sticking around. I simply fille up the buckets with a scoop of OxiClean and fill it with water. This one was super easy because I can allow everything to happen right in the bins themselves. After about 10 minutes I scrub all the crevices with a cleaning toothbrush to get up any of those set in stains or other grime that may have lodged itself in there. This particular application also gets rid of odors, which is amazing because these bins really tend to reek.

Baby Carrier (Spot Clean)

If you need to spot clean your baby carrier, grab some OxiClean baby product and just make up your spot clean solution. Use a cleaning toothbrush to apply it to the affected surface. I often use this to clean the straps and it works like a charm. Make sure to give it a good rinse with a damp microfiber cloth to make sure all extra product has been removed.

Bathroom Sink (Concentrate)

The bathroom sink, especially a porcelain one, can tend to get quite nasty over time. You see a lot of discoloration around the drain and the overflow hole. Just apply the concentrate solution to both areas, let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub it with a cleaning toothbrush. You’ll see all sorts of nastiness come out of there! Finally, give it a really good rinse and polish with a microfiber cloth.

Carpet Stains (Spot Cleaner)

Now for carpet stains, you want to remove as much of the stain as possible by blotting it up with a paper towel. Once that’s done, apply the spot cleaner with a cleaning toothbrush and let it sit for a few minutes. Use some clean water, apply that with the cleaning toothbrush, then blot it up with a paper towel. If there’s any remaining product, you can just repeat that process with the clean water and the paper towel until there’s no more product left behind.
